Lake Erie is recognized as the world's best smallmouth bass fishery, providing unequalled opportunities for limit catches and trophy bronzebacks. Erie's giant smallmouths are hard-fighting, aerial sportfish that can test any angler's skills. Summer offers great bass angling, but the prime time for truly "monster bass" is from late August until mid-October. |
| Without a doubt, both early and late in the season, live bait is the absolute best approach to fishing Lake Erie smallmouth bass. In mid-summer, however, rattlebaits, crankbaits, spinners, tube jigs, spinnerbaits, even plastic worms will catch plenty of bass in the shallow waters of Lake Erie's Western Basin. In deeper areas - off the Pelee Islands, for example - jigging spoons, weighted live-bait rigs and larger twistertail & tube jigs get the nod. |  |
